Police Arrest Three Over Violent Masquerade Disturbance in Etinan

Akwa Ibom State Police have taken three men into custody for allegedly causing violent unrest while disguised as masquerades. The arrests occurred in Mbioto II Village, within the Etinan Local Government Area.

According to a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the Command responded to a distress call on the afternoon of Friday, January 23, 2026. The report detailed a serious breach of public peace involving masquerades engaged in violent conduct.

Officers were swiftly deployed to the scene, where they apprehended the two suspected masquerades and their alleged leader. The individuals in custody are identified as Kenneth Bassey (31), Ofonime Isaac (25), and Paul Samuel Bassey (21). They are currently detained and aiding police with the investigation.

Commissioner of Police CP Baba Mohammad Azare, fsi, praised the operatives for their prompt response. He reaffirmed the Command's dedication to upholding public order and safety throughout all communities in the state.

CP Azare emphasized that while the police respect the cultural heritage and traditions of Akwa Ibom, any activities that escalate into violence, intimidation, or threaten public peace will be dealt with decisively according to the law.
