Court Dismisses Criminal Case Against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan

A High Court in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, has formally terminated the criminal proceedings initiated by the Federal Government against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The case was concluded after the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation submitted a Notice of Discontinuance. Justice C. N. Oji, presiding over the matter, acknowledged the filing and subsequently struck out the charges, which included allegations of criminal defamation linked to comments the senator made during a television interview.

In court, the government’s counsel stated the discontinuance was made under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act and reflected a consideration of justice and public trust in the legal system. Justice Oji, while closing the case, expressed hope that the decision would encourage greater caution in the use of prosecutorial authority and contribute to reconciliation and adherence to the rule of law.

Following the ruling, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan stated she felt vindicated by the result, reaffirming her commitment to her constituents and to upholding democratic principles. She also thanked her legal representatives and supporters.

The now-closed case had been the subject of significant public discussion, with various groups previously criticizing the prosecution as a potential threat to free expression and political dialogue.
