BREAKING NEWS: Crane Collapse on High-Speed Rail Project Derails Train, Killing 32 in Thailand

NAKHON RATCHASIMA, Thailand – A catastrophic construction accident on Tuesday morning sent a heavy crane crashing onto a moving passenger train, resulting in a fiery derailment that has left at least 32 people dead and dozens more injured in one of Thailand's worst rail disasters in recent memory.

The tragedy occurred at approximately 9:05 a.m. local time in the Sikhio district of Nakhon Ratchasima province, a key transit corridor in northeastern Thailand. A crane involved in the construction of the ambitious Thai-Chinese High-Speed Railway project collapsed onto the tracks as an express train from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani passed underneath.

Witnesses described a scene of horror as the crane's metal structure struck the train traveling at about 120 km/h (75 mph). The impact violently derailed several carriages, with reports indicating the force sliced through the middle of the second coach.

"The crane slid and fell onto the passing train. There were two loud explosions and then fire," one eyewitness told local media. Train staff member Thirasak Wongsoongnern recounted being thrown into the air upon impact. The second carriage, where the crane made direct contact, was immediately engulfed in flames, trapping passengers inside and hindering rescue efforts.

Emergency services rushed to the site at Ban Thanon Kod, using hydraulic cutters to free people trapped in the mangled wreckage. The search was temporarily paused due to fears of a chemical leak from the train. The latest figures from rescue officials confirm at least 32 fatalities, with 66 injured, several in critical condition. Between 171 and 195 passengers and crew were believed to be on board at the time of the crashed.

The sole contractor for the elevated rail section is Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited (Italthai), a major Thai construction firm. The company has come under intense scrutiny, as it was also the lead contractor for the State Audit Building in Bangkok, which collapsed during an earthquake in March 2025, killing approximately 100 people. Dozens of its executives were indicted for professional negligence in that prior disaster.

In a statement, Italian-Thai Development expressed deep regret and condolences, pledging to provide compensation and cooperate fully with the investigation. However, the repeat incident has sparked national outrage and calls for severe accountability

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul did not mince words in his response. "This kind of incident can only happen because of negligence," he stated, vowing to hold the company responsible. He suggested a revision of laws to blacklist companies with repeated serious safety failures.

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has launched an immediate investigation and is suing the construction company. A fact-finding committee has been tasked with determining the cause within 15 days. Preliminary estimates place the damage to the train alone at over 100 million baht (approx. $3.1 million).

The accident casts a dark shadow over the $5.4 billion high-speed rail project, a flagship infrastructure venture intended to connect Bangkok to the Laos border and is a key part of China's Belt and Road Initiative in Southeast Asia. Chinese officials, noting that a Thai firm was the constructor for this specific section, stated they "attach great importance to the safety of projects and personnel."

The tragedy has also reignited concerns about construction safety standards in Thailand, where deadly accidents are frequently attributed to lax regulation enforcement. This is the second fatal incident on this specific rail project, following a tunnel collapse in the same province in August 2024 that killed three workers.

In the aftermath, several train services have been canceled or rerouted. As recovery efforts continue and families mourn, the nation is left demanding answers and accountability for a preventable disaster that has shaken public confidence in major infrastructure projects.
