Marshall Katung Foundation Awards Scholarships, Restoring Hope to 400 Southern Kaduna Students

A total of four hundred indigent students from Southern Kaduna have been awarded scholarships worth N100,000 each by the Marshall Katung Foundation, a gesture that has reignited educational aspirations for many young people across Nigerian tertiary institutions.

The initiative, according to the Foundation, stems from the genuine desire of its founder, Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, to support students whose academic dreams are threatened by financial constraints.

Speaking on behalf of the Senator, Elder Bature Likoro, Chairman of the Southern Kaduna Community Development Associations, emphasized that Senator Katung views education as the most powerful tool for social change and human capital development.

"Empowering our youth through education is a direct strategy to combat poverty, crime, and unemployment in our region," Elder Likoro stated.

He reaffirmed the commitment to sustain the scholarship scheme annually and expand its reach to more students across Southern Kaduna. He also appealed for patience from applicants who were not selected this time, assuring them that future opportunities would arise.

Earlier, the Chairperson of the Foundation’s Scholarship Committee, Barr. Gloria Ballason, provided context for the selection, noting that the 400 beneficiaries were carefully chosen from a pool of 3,125 applicants after a rigorous and transparent screening process. She commended the committee's dedication to ensuring the support reached genuinely indigent students.

Echoing the call for broader support, the Secretary of the Scholarship Committee, Mr. Edward Pama Auta, urged the government and other public-spirited individuals to invest more in educational programs. He highlighted that such investments alleviate the burden on struggling families and promote equal learning opportunities for all.

The event also featured a keynote address on "Mainstreaming STEM Education for National Development" by Prof. John La’ah, Chairman of the Southern Kaduna Professors Forum. Prof. La’ah extensively discussed the critical importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), arguing that for Nigeria to harness its innovative potential, STEM education must begin at the primary school level.

"Early exposure will inspire creativity and prepare young minds to solve real-life problems in science and technology," he said. He further stressed that a society's progress is directly linked to its quality of education, calling for stronger partnerships to build a culture that prioritizes learning and innovation.

The profound impact of the scholarship was voiced by the beneficiaries. Speaking on their behalf, Zingina Precious Samuel and Omega Enoch Alajibi thanked Senator Katung for the "lifeline intervention," which they said arrived at a critical moment. They pledged to use the opportunity judiciously and offered prayers for the Senator and the Foundation's continued strength.
