Akume: North Central Poised to Drive Nigeria's Non-Oil Export Boom

JOS, Nigeria – The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has identified the North Central region as a future powerhouse for Nigeria's non-oil exports, citing its rich mineral deposits and strong agricultural base.

Akume made the declaration on Tuesday in Jos, Plateau State, while commissioning a 250-seater conference centre named in his honour at the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) zonal office. He emphasized that with sustained investment in logistics and transport infrastructure, the region is strategically positioned to lead national economic diversification efforts.

"With improved logistics infrastructure, this region can become a key driver of Nigeria’s diversification agenda," Akume stated.

He praised the NSC and the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy for the new facility, describing it as “a testament to commitment and vision” in strengthening the nation's logistics system.

“This edifice is not just a building; it is a statement of vision, a testament to commitment, and a reflection of the renewed energy driving Nigeria’s port and logistics system under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the SGF said.

He reiterated the Federal Government's commitment under the Renewed Hope Agenda to prioritizing critical transport and trade infrastructure across all regions to boost economic connectivity.

“We are building an economy that thrives on connectivity,” Akume said. “An economy where a farmer in Benue can ship produce seamlessly to Lagos Port, and an exporter in Jos can access global markets without unnecessary bottlenecks.”

The SGF commended the NSC's Executive Secretary, Dr. Akutah Pius Ukeyima, for the Council's role in bridging the gap between seaports and inland regions through projects like Inland Dry Ports and zonal offices. He noted that the new conference centre will serve as a hub for stakeholder engagement and capacity building.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, represented by Deputy National Chairman Chief Emma Eneukwu, said the project demonstrates President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda delivering tangible results across Nigeria.

Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, represented by Deputy Governor Ngo Josephine Piyo, congratulated the NSC on the "remarkable achievement." He stated that the facility is a strategic enabler for trade, investment, and job creation in the region.

"Plateau is richly endowed with mineral resources, agricultural produce, and a vibrant entrepreneurial population. This zonal office will greatly enhance access to efficient logistics and export facilitation," he said.
