Game On! UNIJOS Launches Rally for Historic NUGA 2025

The University of Jos (UNIJOS) has ignited the countdown to the 27th Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) with a vibrant awareness rally through the city of Jos. Scheduled for 2025, this edition will be a landmark event, marking the first time the games have ever been hosted in Nigeria's North Central region.

The colorful rally, which kicked off from the Hill Station Roundabout, saw a massive turnout of students, staff, alumni, and dignitaries, all showcasing their excitement and readiness for the forthcoming games.

Speaking at the event, the Vice Chancellor of UNIJOS, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, declared the university's full preparedness to host the nation. “We are here to tell the world that UNIJOS is ready,” he stated. “The students, staff, and the entire Plateau community are prepared to receive contingents from across the country. We promised Nigeria the best NUGA ever—and we are going to deliver it.”

Addressing potential security concerns, Prof. Ishaya emphasized that Jos is safe and open for visitors. “As you can see, everyone is out, happy, and excited. Jos is safe, and we are ready to host the nation,” he assured.

The Vice Chancellor expressed gratitude for the support from the Federal Government and specifically acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his administration’s focus on sports and youth development. He revealed that UNIJOS has been designated as one of ten National Centres of Excellence in Sports and has launched new academic programs in Sports Science, Sports Medicine, and Exercise and Performance Studies to help grow Nigeria's sports industry.

Prof. Ishaya also commended the Plateau State Government, led by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, for its strong backing. “The state government has been very supportive because they know hosting over 10,000 visitors will significantly boost the local economy,” he noted.

Adding his voice, Gad Shamaki Peter, Global President of the UNIJOS Alumni Association, described sports as a vital tool for unity and youth empowerment. He said the games would not only showcase the potential of Nigerian youth but also drive infrastructural development and change the narrative about Plateau State.

With excitement building, the 27th NUGA Games at UNIJOS is poised to be a historic event—uniting students from across Nigeria, promoting national cohesion, and showcasing Plateau State as a premier hub of peace, hospitality, and sporting excellence.
