APC Dominates Ondo Council Election, PDP withdraws

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a landslide victory in the Ondo State local government elections, winning 16 out of 18 chairmanship seats. Joseph Aeemo, Chairman of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC), announced the results on Sunday in Akure.

The election, which took place on Saturday, saw only 12 political parties contesting for chairmanship and councillorship offices. Notably, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) withdrew from the election, citing concerns over the electoral commission's credibility.

The participating parties included Action Alliance, Action Democratic Party, Action People's Party, All Progressives Congress, All Progressives Grand Alliance, Boot Party, Labour Party, National Rescue Party, New Nigeria Peoples Party, Social Democratic Party, Young Progressive Party, and Zenith Labour Party.

This election marks a significant milestone, as the last council election in Ondo State was held on August 23, 2020. Since the tenure of the elected council officials expired on August 22, 2023, the state's 18 council areas have been managed by civil servants. After several postponements, the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission finally conducted the election on January 18, 2025.
