FRSC, Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital Forge Alliance to Curb Road Crashes in Nasarawa

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Akwanga Unit Command, and Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital have agreed to collaborate in a bid to strengthen emergency response and save more lives on Nasarawa State highways.

The partnership agreement was reached when the Unit Commander of RS 431 Akwanga, ACC Byinchit N. Gambo, led a delegation from the command on a courtesy visit to the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Esala E. Abene, at his office.

Welcoming the FRSC team, Dr. Abene praised the Corps for its relentless efforts in maintaining road safety and expressed the hospital's readiness to work closely with the agency.

The Medical Director explained that the hospital's core mandate is to save lives, adding that the Accident and Emergency unit remains one of the major entry points for patients. He noted that the hospital is open to collaboration in terms of training, as it has visiting consultants, including orthopaedic and trauma surgeons, whose expertise is critical to emergency response.

"We are willing to partner with you and bring in training where necessary," Dr. Abene stated.

In his remarks, ACC Gambo said the visit was designed to familiarise his team with the upgraded facility and to congratulate Dr. Abene on his appointment as the pioneer Medical Director of the specialist hospital.

She stressed the complementary nature of both agencies' mandates, noting that while the FRSC works to prevent crashes and rescue victims, the hospital provides the critical care needed to sustain lives after accidents.

"We are here to seek collaboration and support because our mandates are similar we are both out to save lives," Gambo reiterated.

The Unit Commander disclosed that the Corps has set an ambitious target for 2026 a 10 percent reduction in road traffic fatalities and injuries nationwide. To achieve this, he said enforcement would be intensified against critical offences such as overloading, overspeeding, riding without helmets, and non-use of seat belts, which are major contributors to crashes.

"When we respond to emergencies and rescue victims, the hospital plays a vital role in ensuring their continued care," Gambo explained. "We want to explore training opportunities for our personnel in basic first aid and casualty handling to improve our rescue operations. We also seek your assistance for our medical outreach programmes at motor parks, where we check drivers' blood pressure and sugar levels as part of our corporate social responsibility."
