PDP's Sunday Biggs Announces 2027 Bid, Slams Governor’s "Abysmal Performance"

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau State loyal to the Turaki-led faction, Sunday Biggs, has criticised the administration of Governor Caleb Mutfwang, accusing it of failing to meet the expectations of Plateau people despite the massive support that brought the government to power.

Biggs, who hails from Mangu Local Government Area—the same area as Governor Mutfwang—said his decision to contest the 2027 governorship election was informed by what he described as the “abysmal performance” of the current administration and the need to restore confidence in leadership from the zone.

Speaking during a press conference in Jos on Friday, Biggs said the government had failed to deliver meaningful development after three years in office.

“We cannot honestly point to significant developmental efforts initiated and executed by this government in the last three years. Plateau State is bigger than any individual, and if anyone fails to perform, he does not deserve to remain there, irrespective of where he comes from,” he said.

According to him, zoning the governorship to Plateau Central and specifically to Mangu was never about personal loyalty but about competent leadership and service delivery.

“The fact that I am from Mangu does not make me more qualified than others. The mandate was given to the Central Zone and entrusted to Mangu. I am here to complete the eight-year arrangement and restore confidence in our people,” Biggs stated.

“My brother has genuinely fallen short of expectations, and I believe another capable person from the same local government must step forward to prove that leadership is about competence, pedigree, and capacity, not kinship,” he added.

Biggs noted that many residents of Plateau State had celebrated the emergence of Governor Mutfwang in 2023 because they believed his administration would bring development and unite the state across ethnic and religious lines. He said growing dissatisfaction among citizens had created the need for credible leaders to provide an alternative direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.

On the lingering crisis within the PDP, Biggs maintained that the party remained united despite the existence of different factions, insisting that the issues had already been resolved by the Supreme Court and only required proper interpretation and implementation by relevant authorities.

He explained that his alignment with a particular bloc within the party was based on consultations, legal advice, and personal conviction, expressing optimism that aggrieved members of the PDP would eventually reconcile in pursuit of victory in 2027.

Biggs also promised to run an inclusive and people-oriented administration if elected governor, stressing that his years of experience in public service including serving as Director of Protocol and Permanent Secretary had exposed him to the developmental challenges facing communities across Plateau State.

He added that he would work closely with former governors and other stakeholders committed to repositioning the state for unity, peace, and sustainable development.
