Maiduguri Mourns: 23 Killed in Coordinated Suicide Bombings

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that at least 23 people were killed and 108 others injured in a series of devastating, coordinated bomb blasts that rocked Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, on Monday evening.

Authorities described the incident as multiple suicide attacks targeting crowded civilian locations. The near-simultaneous explosions occurred at approximately 7:24 p.m. at three separate sites: the bustling Monday Market, the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), and the Post Office Flyover.

In a statement, Police Public Relations Officer ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso confirmed that preliminary investigations point to suspected suicide bombers using improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

"The choice of targets a major market, a hospital, and a busy flyover was clearly intended to cause mass casualties, sow panic, and cripple socio-economic life in the city," the statement read.

The coordinated nature of the attacks has raised fresh concerns about the evolving tactics of insurgent groups in the North-East.

In the immediate aftermath, joint security forces, including police tactical units and the military, were deployed to secure and cordon off the affected areas. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit conducted thorough sweep operations to ensure no additional devices remained.

Borno State Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, led a high-level assessment team to the scenes, where he commiserated with victims and their families. He assured residents of the command's unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property and announced that enhanced security measures have been activated across the state.

Emergency response teams, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA), worked with medical personnel to evacuate the wounded. All 108 injured victims have been transported to various hospitals in Maiduguri and are receiving treatment.

Authorities have significantly increased security patrols throughout the city and surrounding communities. Residents have been urged to remain calm but vigilant, and to report any suspicious movements or objects to the nearest security agency.

The police command commended the public for their resilience and cooperation, reiterating its determination to restore normalcy and maintain peace in the state.
