300 allegedly killed, 50,000 displaced as Tiv community fears humanitarian crisis

A Tiv socio-cultural organization, Mzough U Tiv, Taraba State Chapter, has alleged the killing of 300 of its members and the displacement of not less than 50,000, after attacks by armed Fulani herdsmen in a period of five months.

Describing the attacks as "ethnic cleansing", the organization claimed the attacks occurred in Takum and Donga Local Government Areas of the state and expressed their fear for a humanitarian crisis if the government does not intervene.

In a press statement made available to our reporter, President of the organization, Professor Hemen Agere, also lamented the lack of concern by the authorities for the plight of the people over the period. 

The statement read: "You are aware that, since September 2025, our people have been under a heinous siege up to this moment. 

"This ethnic cleansing has been orchestrated by armed Fulani Terrorists and their supporters. 

"The recently displaced Tiv in Takum and Donga LGAs had left farms unharvested.

"It may interest you to know that whenever any of them attempts to access their farms/settlements, they are either killed or subjected to other debasing inhuman treatments. Such is the present dilemma of Tiv in Southern Taraba State.

"For the period of five months, Taraba State Government is yet to act decisively on the continued killings and mass displacement of its Tiv Citizens by Fulani Terrorists who act with impunity.  

"This has resulted in the loss of no fewer than 300 innocent Tiv lives within the space of five months.

"Not less than 50,000 people are internally displaced from Chanchanji to Akete Ward of Takum and Donga Local Government Areas respectively.

"These attacks by the Fulani militia on the Tiv of Southern Taraba are yet to be given recognition by governments at all levels. 

"Not less than 100 villages have been destroyed beyond recognition 

"Twelve Churches of NKST and the Roman Catholic Church have been destroyed and vandalized".

The organization therefore appealed to the Taraba State governor and "good spirited organizations" to visit the affected areas to see things themselves.

"We call on the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, to intervene as quickly as possible before it is too late. Otherwise, the risk of malnutrition is very high.

"This risk of humanitarian challenges are so high, especially with the recent changes in weather, and the approaching rainy season," the statement added.
