Senate Probe into Safe School Initiative Faces Pressure to Deliver Real Accountability, Not Political Theater

The Senate committee led by Orji Uzor Kalu carries the critical responsibility of investigating the Safe School Initiative, and it must deliver genuine accountability rather than a superficial political exercise.

 Chairman Kalu's vow to track every allocated naira and dollar stands as a solemn promise to a public demanding answers. Nigerians deserve to know exactly how the funds were spent, why the established security and early-warning systems repeatedly failed to prevent attacks, and who is responsible for the glaring gaps between expenditure and outcomes. With a tight four-week deadline to audit 11 years of complex operations, the committee must balance thoroughness with the urgent need for actionable findings, as millions of parents face daily anxiety over their children's safety.

The initiative's fundamental flaw was its fragmented design from the outset, scattering responsibility across numerous ministries and agencies without a centralized command framework. 

This has resulted in a cacophony of overlapping duties between the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Nigeria Police Force, state governments, and the military, creating confusion instead of coordination. 

This structural chaos has paralyzed real-time reporting and slowed emergency responses, leaving schools vulnerable during prolonged attacks.

For its work to have real impact, the committee must prescribe clear institutional fixes. It needs to assign unambiguous security authority to a single accountable agency, mandate integrated real-time monitoring systems, and compel uniform implementation by state governments while strengthening local community protection. Ultimately, schools cannot be secured in isolation while the wider nation faces insecurity. The government must fulfill its basic constitutional duty to protect life and property.

 At a time when disillusionment threatens the value of education, preventing schools from becoming synonymous with danger is imperative. The public awaits honest answers and viable solutions from this probe.
