Rivers State Impeachment Effort Stalled as Chief Judge Cites Court Order

The Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Chibuzor Simeon Amadi, has formally acknowledged receipt of a resolution from the State House of Assembly directing the formation of a seven-member panel to investigate impeachment allegations against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

However, in his response, Justice Amadi clarified that he is legally restrained from proceeding further due to a subsisting High Court order. That order was issued following a lawsuit by Governor Fubara and his Deputy, who challenged the legitimacy of the impeachment notice served on them.

The Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, has received the Chief Judge’s acknowledgment but has not publicly responded to its content—a silence that underscores the setback to their impeachment push.

Although the Speaker and the Assembly have filed an appeal against the initial court order, the Chief Judge’s correspondence confirms that, for now, the impeachment panel cannot be constituted.
