Governor Mutfwang Champions Global Exchanges, Issues Stark Warning on Education and Girl-Child Exploitation

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has highlighted the transformative role of international educational exchanges in building leadership and fostering global competitiveness. He simultaneously issued a stark warning on the dangers of declining school enrollment and the exploitation of girls in the state.

The Governor made the remarks on Thursday, January 9, 2026, while receiving the National President of the United States Government Exchange Alumni Association of Nigeria (USGEAAN), Dr. Nosa Tukura, and her delegation at the Old Government House in Rayfield, Jos.

Reflecting on his own experience, Governor Mutfwang stated that exchange programmes sparked a fundamental shift in his approach. “Those exchanges have been quite profound. For me, they marked a paradigm shift in my perception of public service and leadership,” he said.

He then turned to critical local challenges, expressing deep concern over falling school enrolment, particularly in mining communities, which he said poses long-term social and security risks for the state.

Governor Mutfwang specifically highlighted the “growing menace” of girl-child exploitation as an emerging crisis. He disclosed that enforcement operations in December alone led to the rescue of many underage girls from hotels and brothels, some of whom were already exposed to substance abuse.

“This underscores the need for coordinated social action, trauma management, and stronger psychosocial support systems, especially for our vulnerable and displaced populations,” he stated, commending USGEAAN for supporting trauma education initiatives.

The Governor emphasized the urgent need to upgrade Plateau’s education system to keep pace with global technological advancements and called for stronger Nigeria-U.S. collaboration, describing Nigeria’s stability as vital for global development.

He assured the delegation of his administration’s openness to strategic partnerships and pledged to review the association’s proposal for a STEM, mentorship, and entrepreneurship initiative.

Earlier, Dr. Tukura, announcing that Plateau State produced USGEAAN’s first National President, outlined the association's impact. She noted achievements including hosting U.S. Ambassadors, renovating schools, and global recognition for the Girls Education Mission (GEM) in partnership with the state, which won first place in the 2025 Local Innovators Program.

She presented a partnership proposal centered on the American Space Jos, with a pilot for 100 students (60% girls), aiming to scale to over 1,000 beneficiaries in five years and position Plateau as a model for educational innovation and gender equity.
