Federal Government Inaugurates ₦40 Billion CCTV cameras for Lagos's Third Mainland Bridge

A new surveillance control centre, valued at forty billion naira, was officially opened on Sunday for the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos. The facility is part of a comprehensive security and safety upgrade for the major thoroughfare.

Works Minister David Umahi, speaking at the commissioning ceremony, stated that the closed-circuit television (CCTV) system is intended to combat reckless driving, enhance security measures, and provide intervention capabilities for suicide prevention. The project was initially proposed in 2025.

Minister Umahi explained that the centre follows the extensive rehabilitation of the bridge, which began after the present government assumed office in 2023. He described the initial condition of the bridge as "very terrible," noting that it, along with the Carter and Iddo bridges, required urgent and complete assessment and repairs above and below the waterline.

President Bola Tinubu approved the full scope of rehabilitation work, which included replacing old expansion joints. Umahi confirmed these efforts have now restored smoother driving conditions and increased the structural longevity of the bridge.

From the new control centre, security operatives will monitor live camera feeds to ensure compliance with speed limits and other regulations. The integrated project also includes a surveillance boat and two utility vehicles, which will be deployed to the police to aid monitoring and enable swift response to incidents.

"The objective is to have total visibility of all activities on the bridge," Umahi said. He emphasized his concern over speeding violations and appealed to drivers to adhere to posted traffic rules for everyone's safety.
