Stakeholders Unite Against Rising Tide of Rape in Zangon Kataf

ZANGON KATAF – In response to an alarming surge in rape and gender-based violence, the Community Dialogue Committee (CDC) hosted a critical one-day workshop to unite community leaders in a decisive fight against the crisis.

Held yesterday at the Maryamu and Yakubu Skills Acquisition Center in Ungwan Wakili, the event brought together security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and civil society organizations.

The CDC Chairman, His Highness Luke Adankat, opened the proceedings with an urgent call to action. He expressed deep concern over the escalating number of rape cases, declaring the situation critical.

“The rate of sexual violence in our communities has reached an alarming level,” Adankat stated. “This is not just a women's issue; it is a societal crisis that demands a unified response from all of us to create a safe environment for our women and children.”

Mr. Clement Solomon, the CDC Public Relations Officer, outlined the committee's background. He explained that the 25-member CDC was established in Zonkwa on May 17, 2023, through a partnership between Global Rights and the Kukah Centre, with support from the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

Solomon highlighted a disturbing shift in the local security landscape. “The nature of insecurity in Zangon Kataf is evolving. We are now witnessing an alarming increase in sexual violence against women, particularly those working on farms. It is deeply troubling that incidents of rape occur almost daily. This is a crisis that requires our immediate and full attention.”

In a presentation titled “Creating Awareness to End Rape and Other Gender-Based Violence,” Mrs. Grace Yohanna Abbin, Centre Manager of the Salama Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Kafanchan, described rape as a severe crime that inflicts lasting physical and emotional trauma.

“Rape is not about sex; it is about power and control,” Abbin emphasized. She urged the community to break the silence, stressing that anyone can be a victim.

“Do not remain silent. Report the crime immediately and ensure victims receive medical attention, as rape can lead to unwanted pregnancies, diseases, and injuries,” she advised. “We must blame the perpetrators, not the victims. Rape is a crime, not a shame.”

Speaking on behalf of the traditional rulers, Mr. Yusuf Ashafa from the Ikulu Chiefdom commended the CDC for organizing the workshop and pledged the full support of traditional institutions in ending the scourge of rape.
