Zamfara Political Murder: Family Laments Judicial Delays as Trial Stalls

The family of the slain Zamfara politician, Magaji Lawali Yandoto, has decried the slow pace of justice, expressing deep frustration as the first court hearing in his murder case was adjourned due to the prosecution's absence.

In a statement issued to newsmen in Gusau on Wednesday, the family's spokesperson, Anas Magaji Lawali Yandoto, described the loss of their "pillar" as a painful wound that is compounded by delays in the judicial process.

"We are still grappling with the brutal murder of our beloved father," Anas stated. "While we are relieved that the accused has finally been arraigned, we are deeply concerned by the immediate setback."

The family acknowledged and praised Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, for his initial intervention, which led to the arraignment of the sole accused, Retired Col. Rabiu Yandoto.

They revealed that they had previously written to the governor, expressing alarm that the accused had been granted bail and was moving freely without facing trial. The subsequent arraignment by the Ministry of Justice was therefore a welcome development.

However, at the first court sitting on Wednesday, October 15, the case was adjourned to November 20 because the government's prosecuting lawyer was absent, citing another court engagement.

"Regrettably, the government lawyer was not present, forcing an adjournment," the family's statement read. "This is exactly the kind of delay we fear could derail the pursuit of justice."

The family noted a silver lining in the presence of several human rights organizations who attended the proceedings as watching briefs, thanking them for their vigilance.

"We maintain our full confidence that the government of Governor Dauda Lawal will ensure this case is handled fairly," the statement continued. "We also have faith in the presiding judge's ability to deliver a just verdict. We believe that under this leadership, justice will ultimately be served."

The family   thanked  all well-wishers, relatives, and concerned organizations for their support and prayers during the difficult time and confirmed that the legal process, however delayed, is now formally underway.
