University Don Advocates for Unifying Faith and Science in Radiology to Enhance Healing

Professor Abdul Jimmy Salaam of the University of Jos has described radiology as a unique medical specialty that harmonizes science with faith to improve patient outcomes.

He made this assertion during the institution’s 113th inaugural lecture, held at the university’s multipurpose auditorium in Jos.

Delivering a lecture titled “Seeing and Treating with the Eyes of Faith: The Perspective of a Radiologist,” Salaam, a specialist in General and Interventional Radiology, explained that the discipline demands precision, intuition, and confidence in interpreting what may not be immediately visible.

“For a radiologist, seeing with the eyes of faith means trusting our training and subtle imaging cues—whether detecting an early tumour on a mammogram or a fracture on an X-ray,” he said. He stressed that accurate diagnosis often relies on more than just visible evidence.

Speaking on interventional radiology, he noted that it goes beyond diagnosis to active treatment. “Faith takes on an active dimension here. We navigate catheters and ablate tumours using imaging without direct vision—trusting the process, the technology, and our own hands,” he explained.

Salaam maintained that radiology requires a careful balance between technology, medical knowledge, and a belief in the imperceptible. “We must transform pixels on a screen into healing and hope,” he added, highlighting the profession's growing relevance in modern medicine.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Tanko Ishaya, represented by Professor Joash Amupitan, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), described inaugural lectures as a vital academic tradition. He commended Professor Salaam for his thorough preparedness and for his dedication to mentoring younger academics in the field.
