The Jonathan Comeback : Ex president's 2027 Bid Ignites Debate Over Legacy and Law

 

Former President Goodluck Jonathan's potential bid for the 2027 presidency has sparked significant interest and debate in Nigeria.

According to Professor Jerry Gana, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Jonathan has been confirmed to return to the field for the 2027 presidential race. A close ally of Jonathan also confirmed that he's ready to run again, citing growing calls from Nigerians who now believe his past administration was underappreciated.

 The PDP appears to be courting Jonathan to contest the presidency, with some governors and stakeholders backing his potential candidacy. Former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Chief Olabode George, described Jonathan as "eminently qualified" to run for office, highlighting his track record

 However, Jonathan's eligibility for the 2027 presidency is being questioned due to a 2018 constitutional amendment that bars individuals sworn in twice as president from running again. Some lawyers argue that this amendment doesn't apply retroactively to Jonathan, while others contend that it disqualifies him.

 The Tinubu Presidency has welcomed Jonathan to the race but emphasized that his past governance record will be scrutinized. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, noted that Jonathan's administration severely damaged the economy and that Nigerians won't easily forget his dismal record.

The Presidency highlighted the contrast between Jonathan's economic performance and President Tinubu's recent economic reforms, which have reportedly stabilized the naira, removed fuel subsidies, and boosted foreign reserves to over $42 billion.

If Jonathan decides to run, it could significantly impact the dynamics of the 2027 elections, given his national profile and reputation for conceding defeat without conflict.
