Former IGPs Forum Denies Allegations of Power Usurpation, Reaffirms Support for Current IGP
The Forum of Retired Inspectors-General of Police has dismissed claims that its leader, Sir Mike Okiro, is attempting to undermine the authority of the current Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.
In a statement released on Saturday by Supreme Ibitome, special Assistant on Media to the former Inspector General of police, the forum described the allegations as "baseless, unfounded, and entirely false," attributing them to individuals seeking to tarnish Okiro’s reputation.
The clarification followed reports suggesting interference in the affairs of the Nigeria Police Force by the retired IGPs. The forum explained that its recent meeting was convened to review the compulsory retirement of some senior police officers, emphasizing that Okiro’s role was strictly as the leader of the consultative body and not as an individual influencing the current IGP.
“The current IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, is an intelligent, well-educated, and experienced officer who does not require external influence,” the statement read. It further noted that Okiro, who served as IGP from 2007 to 2009, had not been accused of meddling in police affairs since leaving office 14 years ago.
The forum accused the purveyors of the allegations of being indifferent to the welfare of retired officers but vowed not to be deterred by what it termed “malicious propaganda.”
“We remain committed to advocating for the rights and dignity of both serving and retired officers,” the statement added.
The forum urged the public to disregard the claims and support efforts to improve police welfare and national security.
