USAID Wraps Up Operations in Nasarawa State, Transitions Projects to U.S. Embassy

 

The Nasarawa State Government has officially confirmed the conclusion of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)’s operations in the state. The announcement, made on June 4, 2025, marks the end of a long-standing partnership in strengthening the state’s health sector.  

In a formal communication to the state government, Veronica Momoh, Senior Project Specialist for Management at USAID Nigeria, stated that remaining U.S.-funded initiatives—including the Global Health Supply Chain - Procurement and Supply Management (GHSC-PSM) project—will now be managed by the U.S. Embassy’s Department of State.  

The disclosure came during a meeting at the office of the Honourable Commissioner for Health, where stakeholders reviewed the current scope of U.S. engagement in Nigeria. Unlike in past years, U.S. support has significantly scaled back, with several technical assistance roles being phased out.  

Dr. Gaza Gwamna, Honourable Commissioner for Health, thanked the U.S. Government and USAID for their years of collaboration, noting that the "greatest legacy of this partnership is the strengthened capacity of our health workers and institutions." However, he acknowledged concerns over the abrupt nature of the transition, despite its inevitability.  

As part of the handover process, the state government is conducting a full audit of all assets provided to state agencies and partners to ensure accountability and sustainable use of remaining resources.  

Nasarawa State reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the progress achieved and fostering continued collaboration with the U.S. Embassy and other development partners to advance public health.
