Strike Hits Kaduna State College of Education as Staff Unions Ultimatum Expires

BY: ABUBAKAR LABARAN

Staff unions at the Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya, will commence a three-day warning strike on Thursday, June 19, 2025, following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum to the state government on Wednesday, June 18.

The Joint Union, comprising the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), Senior Staff Union of Colleges of Education in Nigeria (SSUCOEN), and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), announced the action after government failed to address longstanding welfare demands.

Union Chairman Comrade Alkali Marajos stated the demands include:

Immediate implementation of the Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Academic Salary Structure (CONPCASS) for academic staff and the Consolidated Tertiary Education Institutions Salary Structure (CONTEDISS) for non-academic staff.

and the Amendment of the 65-year retirement age policy to include non-academic staff.

The unions issued the ultimatum during an emergency congress on June 2nd and reiterated their position at a press conference chaired by Marajos. They emphasized that the warning strike from June 19th to June 21st, 2025 (corrected duration) is a direct result of government inaction despite previous assurances.

While committed to dialogue, the unions warned that failure to resolve the issues would lead to the strike and potentially further escalation. They urged the state government to act swiftly to avoid disruption of academic activities at  the college.
