Plateau Set to Host National Conference of State Electoral Commissions

The Chairman of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC), Plangji Daniel Cishak, has announced that all arrangements are in place to host the 13th National Delegates Conference of the Forum of State Independent Electoral Commissions of Nigeria (FOSIECON).

Speaking to journalists in Jos on Tuesday, Cishak disclosed that the conference, themed "Local Government Elections in Nigeria: Issues, Challenges, and Opportunities," will take place from May 21st to 23rd, 2025, in Jos.

Over 300 delegates from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory are expected to attend, including chairmen, commissioners, and secretaries of various State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs).

Cishak emphasized that the conference aims to foster dialogue on grassroots elections, institutional reforms, and the role of SIECs in strengthening local democracy.

The opening ceremony will be chaired by His Majesty, the Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Jacob Gyang Buba, whose leadership provides institutional wisdom and moral guidance. The event will also feature three serving governors, representatives from the Forum of Nigerian House of Assembly Speakers, and members of the National Assembly.

The theme is not only timely but critical," Cishak stated. "It encourages reflection, constructive debate, and actionable solutions, particularly at a time when the credibility of local government elections faces increasing scrutiny."

He added that the conference will facilitate peer review, address challenges, and share innovations to enhance credible local elections. Cishak also highlighted PLASIEC’s efforts to improve institutional capacity through infrastructure upgrades, staff training, and workshops.

The chairman urged the media to provide extensive coverage of the event, stressing their vital role in promoting transparency and accountability in electoral processes. He expressed gratitude for the existing partnership between PLASIEC and journalists, which he said has bolstered electoral credibility in Plateau State.
