Plateau Clears 150 Mining Firms for Operations, Vows Strict Regulation

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has reaffirmed the government's commitment to regulating the mining sector, announcing the clearance of 150 mining operators for lawful activities.  

Speaking at a press conference, Governor Mutfwang emphasized that the decision was carefully considered and aimed at reforming the sector, enhancing security, and protecting communities—not targeting hardworking citizens.  

The governor cited growing concerns over unregulated mining, including youth exploitation, drug abuse, and environmental damage, as reasons for the reforms. He stressed that the ban on all unapproved mining activities remains in force.  

Marking five months since the signing of Executive Order 001 of 2025, which temporarily suspended mining operations, Mutfwang described the measure as a necessary step to restore order, protect communities, and ensure the sector’s long-term sustainability.  

He warned that any operator or individual not cleared by the government’s committee must stay away from mining sites. Additionally, the state will soon begin formalizing artisanal miners into cooperatives to improve oversight and compliance.  

The governor also issued a stern warning to mineral buyers, stating that any purchasing center found sourcing from unauthorized miners—especially underage workers—will face immediate arrest and prosecution.  

Mutfwang urged parents and guardians to take responsibility for their children, warning that minors caught at mining sites—instead of in school—will be arrested alongside their parents or guardians and face legal consequences.
