Senator Plang Advocates for Increased Women’s Representation in Parliament to Boost Good Governance

Senator Diket Plang, representing Plateau Central, emphasized the growing momentum of women’s participation in politics and called for legislative measures to enable their meaningful contribution to national development.  

The Senator made these remarks during the launch of a campaign to increase women’s representation in parliament, held in Jos, the Plateau State capital.  

Timescope News Correspondent  reports that the Nigerian League of Women Voters (NILOWV), in collaboration with the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Plateau State chapter, initiated the "#74 Special Reserved Seats for Women in Parliament" campaign.  

With the theme, *"Advancing Women’s Political Participation in Governance,"* the initiative seeks to highlight the importance of voting rights, promote democracy, and empower women to engage more actively in politics.  

Senator Plang noted that creating opportunities for women to participate in parliament would foster good governance and accelerate socio-economic development.  

Esther Dusu, Chairperson of NILOWV, stated that the campaign aims to inspire Plateau women to recognize their strength, resilience, and potential to shape a better future for their families and communities. She stressed the need for women to have a stronger voice in decision-making processes.  

Similarly, Nene Dung, Chairperson of NAWOJ, highlighted the significance of the collaboration, noting that unity among women leads to greater achievements. She expressed optimism that the movement would result in more women in parliament advocating for gender equality in politics and governance.  

The event brought together women from diverse backgrounds, organizations, and local government areas, featuring goodwill messages on the importance of the initiative.
