Rivers Administrator Warns Against Mischief, Denies Heavy-Handedness Amid Emergency Rule

 

The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), has issued a stern warning to political actors and mischief-makers, refuting claims of high-handedness and impunity leveled against him by civil society groups.  

Speaking through his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Hector Igbikiowubo, Ibas condemned the spread of fake news and politically motivated protests aimed at testing his administration’s resolve. He maintained that his government has exercised "the highest level of restraint" despite the sweeping powers granted under the state of emergency.  

Igbikiowubo dismissed allegations of abuse of power, attributing them to advocacy groups operating in a politically charged environment. He denied reports that security forces had been unleashed on protesters, blaming any excessive actions on "overzealous officers" acting beyond directives.  

“The administrator has issued clear orders not to suppress lawful protests,” he said. “Any heavy-handedness is not from him but from individuals overstepping their bounds.”  

He also debunked social media rumors claiming that the suspended governor and his deputy had been summoned, calling such misinformation dangerous and irresponsible.  

Acknowledging the tense political climate, Igbikiowubo argued that the tolerance of protests reflects the administration’s commitment to constitutional rights. However, he warned that continued provocations could escalate tensions unnecessarily.  

“We all witnessed the near-breakdown of law and order before emergency rule was declared,” he said. “This administration is focused on restoring stability and democracy, but we need cooperation, not chaos.”  

He urged citizens and political players to exercise restraint, emphasizing that peace was essential for Rivers State’s recovery.
