Breaking News: Rivers State Assembly Initiates Impeachment Proceedings Against Governor Fubara and Deputy

The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, following allegations of gross misconduct.  

A notice of impeachment, obtained by *Ogoni Times* on Monday, March 17, 2025, cited constitutional provisions as the basis for the action. The lawmakers referenced Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and other relevant laws.  

The notice stated, “In compliance with Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and other extant laws, we, the undersigned members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, hereby forward to you a Notice of Gross Misconduct by the Deputy Governor of Rivers State in the performance of the functions of her office.”  

The development comes amid rising political tensions in the state. Recently, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike, stirred controversy by asserting that Governor Fubara could face impeachment if found guilty of impeachable offenses. Wike made these remarks during a media briefing, emphasizing that impeachment is a constitutional process and not a criminal act.  

During a visit to Abalama on Saturday, Wike further escalated the situation by claiming that Governor Fubara had already suffered two significant political setbacks and hinted at more challenges ahead. His comments have been interpreted as a veiled threat, further straining the already tense relationship between Wike and Fubara.  

The impeachment process is expected to intensify political maneuvering in Rivers State, with stakeholders closely monitoring the unfolding developments.
