AGILE Project Team Engages Traditional Rulers in Nasarawa State to Promote Girls’ Education

 

In a bid to enhance access to quality education for adolescent girls in Nasarawa State, the AGILE Project team, led by the State Project Coordinator, Aishatu Aliyu Isoga, embarked on an advocacy and sensitization campaign across the Western Senatorial Zone

The team paid courtesy visits to the palaces of the Emir of Keffi, the Emir of Karshi, and the Esu of Karu to engage traditional rulers on the objectives of the project. 

During the visits, Ms. Isoga explained that the AGILE Project aims to improve secondary school education for girls aged 10 to 20 years, with a focus on addressing socio-cultural, financial, and infrastructural challenges that hinder girls’ access to education. She emphasized the importance of community involvement and the critical role of traditional institutions in driving positive change.  

“Our advocacy efforts aim to enlighten traditional rulers and their subjects on the importance of girls’ education. By addressing harmful norms, financial barriers, and infrastructural gaps, we can collectively create an environment where adolescent girls thrive academically,” she stated.  

In response, the Emir of Keffi, Alhaji Dr. Shehu Chindo Yamusa, OON, commended the initiative and stressed the need for qualified teachers and a robust monitoring system to ensure effective project implementation. 

“To achieve the desired impact, it is essential that professional teachers are engaged, and strong monitoring mechanisms are established to track progress,” the Emir noted.  

Similarly, the Emir of Karshi, Alhaji Professor Sani Muhammadu Bako III, and the Esu of Karu, Pharmacist Luka Panya Baba, expressed their unwavering support for the AGILE Project. Both leaders pledged to mobilize their communities and promote policies that foster girls' education in their respective domains.  

The advocacy visits underscore the importance of collaboration between government agencies, traditional institutions, and local communities to address the persistent challenges affecting girls’ education in Nasarawa State.  

With traditional rulers pledging their commitment, the AGILE Project is poised to make significant strides in improving educational opportunities for adolescent girls across the state.
