17 LGs Are the co-owners of Plateau state University - pro.Best

 

The Vice Chancellor of Plateau State University (PLASU) Bokkos, Prof. Shedrack Best, has revealed that the 17 local governments in the state are co-owners of the university. According to Prof. Best, this co-ownership arrangement is enshrined in the law and structure establishing the university.

As a result, the funding arrangement has always provided for the 17 local governments to co-fund the university's activities alongside the state government. However, this arrangement was affected when financial distress forced a rearrangement of the funding formula for the local governments.

Prof. Best made this disclosure during a courtesy visit to the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Euphriam Usman. He highlighted the many areas of collaboration between the university and the ministry, including staff training across the 17 local governments.

The Vice Chancellor appealed for support to address the university's challenges, including inadequate water supply, lack of staff housing, and security concerns. He also requested assistance with vehicles to ease staff and student movement.

In response, the Commissioner and the Chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) Plateau state chapter acknowledged the Vice Chancellor's concerns and pledged to explore solutions. They noted that the remittances to the university are inadequate and promised to seek additional support from prominent politicians, philanthropists, and other influential individuals.
