Southern Kaduna Forum Demands Umahi's Suspension Over Nurse's Death

Group calls for independent investigation into tragic incident at minister's residence

The Southern Kaduna Professionals Forum (SKPF) has urged President Bola Tinubu to suspend Works Minister Senator David Umahi pending an independent investigation into the death of nurse Mary Habila, who reportedly died under unclear circumstances at the minister's residence in Ebonyi State.

In a statement signed by forum president Arc. Samuel H. Yakubu and released Tuesday through Director of Media and Strategic Communications Israel Bulus, the group emphasized that the suspension request "should not be construed as a declaration of guilt but as a step to ensure justice is done and seen to be done."

The forum described Habila's death as "tragic, disturbing and suspicious," noting that it had become a matter of public interest requiring transparent, independent and comprehensive investigation.

"No public office holder, irrespective of status or influence, should be shielded from scrutiny when a Nigerian dies under circumstances requiring investigation," the statement read.

SKPF expressed concern over unconfirmed reports that Habila was found with blood flowing from her mouth, stressing the need for thorough forensic investigation to establish the exact cause of death. The group warned against any attempt to hurriedly bury the deceased before completion of an independent autopsy.

Describing the late nurse as "a national asset," the forum called on the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services and other investigative agencies to conduct an impartial probe. It also urged the Nigerian Medical Association, nurses' associations, civil society groups and the media to sustain pressure for justice.

The forum specifically called on Southern Kaduna lawyers to form a legal team to monitor the investigation and support the bereaved family.

SKPF disclosed it had given Umahi a three-day ultimatum to publicly explain the circumstances surrounding Habila's death.
