Senator Katung Boosts Farming with Fertilizer, Water Pumps for 87 Wards

To ease the strain of rising farming costs and strengthen food security, Senator Sunday Marshall Katung (Kaduna South Senatorial District) has kicked off the distribution of five trailer loads of fertilizer and 150 water pumping machines to farmers, widows, and vulnerable residents across his constituency.

The intervention targets all 87 political wards in the district, aiming to reduce input costs, boost agricultural output, and lift household incomes—especially for those hit hardest by economic hardship.

Flagging off the exercise on Tuesday in Zonkwa, Zangon Kataf Local Government Area, the chairman of the distribution committee, Mr. Christopher Haruna, said the program deliberately includes traditional rulers, religious leaders, persons with disabilities, widows, and other marginalized groups.

“This is part of Senator Katung’s continued commitment to supporting farmers and reinforcing food production across all eight local governments in Kaduna South,” Haruna stated.

He disclosed that 150 water pumping machines have been set aside for dry-season farming, with seven of the eight LGAs receiving 14 machines each in this first phase. He appealed to beneficiaries to use the items solely for farming and avoid reselling them, emphasizing that the goal is sustainable rural development.

Haruna also urged those not included in the initial batch to be patient, assuring that more phases are already being planned to cover a wider number of constituents.

“Senator Katung is determined to reach as many people as possible. This is just the beginning,” he added.

Beneficiaries welcomed the support as a timely lifeline. Widow Mrs. Justina Paul said the fertilizer would allow her to farm a larger area and better provide for her children. In Zangon Kataf, farmer Mr. John Kanwai described the water pump as a game-changer for dry-season farming, reducing his reliance on unpredictable rainfall.

Recipients pledged to use the items responsibly and prayed for continued interventions to uplift rural farmers and vulnerable families.

The distribution is expected to positively impact hundreds of households, offering a practical push toward higher food production and improved livelihoods across the senatorial district.
