Nasarawa Govt. vows to deal with perpetrators of Gender-based-violence

The Nasarawa State Government has vowed to deal decisively with perpetrators of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the state. 

Hauwa Jugbo, Nasarawa State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Humanitarian Services, gave the warning at a press conference on Monday in Lafia as part of activities lined up to commemorate the 2026 International Women's Day.

She called on victims of GBV and their family members to speak out to enable the appropriate authorities to take action against the perpetrators irrespective of their status or relationship with the victims to serve as a deterrent.

The commissioner commended Gov. Abdullahi Sule for his proactiveness in empowering and catering for women and ensuring that victims of GBV are cared for and the perpetrators brought to book.

She emphasised that GBV is a serious offence that affects the victims and society and the government would not tolerate it in any form and would ensure that anyone caught indulging in it faced the law.

The commissioner noted that the government's commitment to the advancement of women was evident in the deliberate policies and programmes being implemented under the visionary leadership of the governor.

"The administration remains steadfast in promoting the welfare, protection, and economic empowerment of women across the state because empowering women is not only a matter of justice but a strategic pathway to sustainable development. 

"We acknowledged that women of Nasarawa State continue to demonstrate resilience, dedication, and strength in agriculture to commerce, education, healthcare, public service, and entrepreneurship.

"Women remain key drivers of social and economic development in our communities and their contributions are invaluable to the stability of families and the progress ; of our state," she added. 

Jugbo explained that despite these remarkable contributions, many women still face challenges such as limited economic opportunities, restricted access to finance, and socio-cultural barriers that hinder their full participation in governance.

She appealed to all stakeholders to collectively address the challenges and assured that the government would sustain its action to enable women to realise their potential.

The Commissioner said they have intensified efforts in protecting women and girls through awareness campaigns, policy advocacy, and collaboration with relevant stakeholders to strengthen support systems for survivors. 

She said that the theme for the 2026 International Women's Day celebration in Nasarawa State is Give to Gain, underscored a simple but powerful truth.

"When societies invest in women and girls, the benefits extend to families, communities, and the entire nation," she added.  (NAN).
