Plateau State University (PLASU) in Bokkos will hold a combined 8th and 9th convocation ceremony on February 14, marking a historic milestone in the institution's academic journey.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Shedrack Best announced the event during a press briefing on Thursday at the university’s main campus, outlining significant achievements, new programmes, and ongoing projects.
He described the forthcoming ceremony as “special and historic,” noting it will celebrate graduates from two academic sessions and feature the university’s first-ever award of postgraduate degrees.
“This convocation will not only cover two academic sessions but will also witness our first set of postgraduate graduates, including those receiving Master’s and Postgraduate Diploma certificates,” Best said.
The Vice-Chancellor commended the media for their sustained partnership, acknowledging their role in sharing the university’s progress with the public.
He also highlighted that PLASU’s transformation aligns with Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s “Time is Now” vision and thanked local government councils for their support as co-owners of the institution.
Among key developments, Best disclosed that the university has secured approval to introduce degree programmes in Medicine and Surgery, Pharmacy, and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Plans are also underway to launch Allied Health Sciences programmes such as Physiotherapy, Optometry, Nutrition and Dietetics, and Radiography.
Other recent advancements include the unbundling of Mass Communication into a Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, the creation of a Faculty of Computing, and enhanced security infrastructure as the university approaches its 20th anniversary.
Additionally, PLASU is expanding its agricultural initiatives through poultry, planned dairy farming, crop cultivation, orchards, and a proposed dam to support irrigation and water supply on campus.
“Our campus sits in a terrain that reflects the beauty of the Plateau landscape — rural, serene, and inspiring. Today, I am proud to say that the labour of our founding heroes and our recent efforts have positioned Plateau State University as an emerging global brand,” Best stated.
Earlier, journalists were given a guided tour of completed and ongoing projects across the campus.
