Nationwide Police on High Alert Amid Planned "Day of Presence" Protests

The Nigeria Police Force has placed all commands and formations on red alert today in response to credible intelligence reports of planned nationwide protests.

The demonstrations, organized under the banner "Occupy Nigeria Movement" and tagged the "Day of Presence," are intended to be held simultaneously at State Government Houses across the country and at strategic locations in the Federal Capital Territory, including the Unity Fountain and Eagle Square in Abuja.

Authorities have issued immediate directives to all zonal and state commands to deploy necessary resources and personnel to prevent any potential breakdown of law and order. The police high command has emphasized that all officers must operate with strict professionalism, adhere to the rules of engagement, and respect the fundamental human rights of citizens during any civic activity. This development comes at a time when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is out of the country, attending the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in the United Arab Emirates.

The "Occupy Nigeria" title evokes memories of a major historical protest movement in January 2012. That mass action was triggered by the government's removal of fuel subsidies, which led to a dramatic increase in petrol prices. The 2012 protests were marked by widespread mobilization, significant economic disruption, and reported casualties, standing as a pivotal moment in the nation's recent socio-political history. The current police alert suggests concerns that today's planned action could mobilize similar public sentiment.

Citizens are advised to exercise caution, verify information from official channels, and avoid spreading unconfirmed reports. The police have recently warned the public about fake news and misinformation circulating on social media, reminding everyone that publishing false statements is a criminal offense under Nigerian law.
