Zamfara Declares Victory Over Cholera, Unveils Plan for Future Health Threats

The Zamfara State Government has officially declared a recent cholera outbreak contained, marking the end of a response effort that tackled thousands of cases across its communities. Health authorities reported no active transmissions are currently ongoing in the state.

The declaration was made by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nafisa Muhammad Maradun, during an After Action Review Meeting at the Public Health Emergency Operations Center in Gusau. Represented by the Director of Public Health, Dr. Yusuf Haske, Dr. Maradun framed the successful containment as a direct result of the administration's "commitment to transparency, accountability, and people-centered governance."

A detailed overview of the outbreak revealed its significant impact: 15,464 total cases were recorded, with 15,265 patients successfully treated and discharged. Tragically, 192 fatalities were documented across all 14 Local Government Areas.

Looking ahead, Dr. Maradun announced that the state is now developing a comprehensive Pandemic Preparedness Plan to proactively address future public health emergencies, including cholera, diarrhea, cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM), and heavy metal contamination. In recognition of their support, appreciation letters have been issued to all partner organizations.

Speaking on behalf of supporting partners, Dr. Raji Mukhtar, the World Health Organization (WHO) State Coordinator, underscored lessons learned from the response. He noted that early challenges in Zurmi and Anka LGAs, coupled with media reports from Gummi, created a vulnerability to misinformation and public anxiety. He commended the state government's "exemplary political will" in mobilizing necessary resources.

Dr. Mukhtar emphasized the need for improved and coordinated data reporting at the Local Government level, particularly through Disease Surveillance and Notification Officers (DSNOs), to strengthen future surveillance and early detection systems.
