Professor Katuka Condemns "Senseless" Attacks, Calls for Justice in Kaduna Communities

By: Abubakar Labaran

KAFANCHAN – Professor Yaki Katuka has strongly condemned the recent brutal attacks in Tanda and Asso communities of Jama'a Local Government Area, Kaduna State, which resulted in the tragic loss of numerous innocent lives.

The university don, who serves as the Chairman of the Northern Nigeria Christians Professors Forum (NNCPF), expressed his profound sadness during an interview in Kafanchan. He described the incidents as a grave assault on the sanctity of human life and the peace the constituency has worked hard to sustain .

“I have received with deep pain and sadness the disturbing news of yet another senseless attack that claimed innocent lives in Tanda, a peaceful community in Asso ward,” said Professor Katuka, echoing the sentiments of federal lawmaker Hon. Daniel Amos, who also condemned the violence .

Professor Katuka insisted that relevant authorities must take concrete steps to ensure justice is served without delay, a call aligned with demands from other local leaders for security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators . He stressed that restoring peace and preventing further senseless killings is of critical importance for the communities and beyond.

The professor extended his heartfelt gratitude to the Kpop Gwong, His Royal Highness Colonel Paul Zakka Wyom (rtd), and the Chairman of Jama'a Local Government Area, Mr. Peter Danjuma Averik, for their immediate efforts in restoring peace . He also acknowledged security operatives for being dogged in their response.

“Your visits and actions brought hope and are a shining example of assurance, compassion, and empathy,” Professor Katuka observed. He stated that their quick response to sue for sustainable peace has raised hopes for understanding and reconciliation among the people, a gesture that is truly appreciated.

He concluded with a prayer: “May God Almighty restore peace to Asso, Tanda Communities and beyond.”

The attacks occur against a backdrop of ongoing efforts to foster stability in the region. Jema'a Local Government has a history of inter-communal dialogue, notably exemplified by the 2016 Kafachan Peace Declaration which brought together diverse ethnic and religious groups . Furthermore, the call for peace by traditional rulers like the Chief of Fadan Kagoma and the Emir of Jama'a remains a continuous endeavor .

Recent initiatives, such as the UN-supported Early Warning and Early Response (EWER) system operational in Kaduna State, aim to mitigate such conflicts. These systems have contributed to reduced conflict levels in areas like Jema'a LGA by fostering local collaboration for timely intervention .

Professor Yaki Katuka is an Associate Professor in the Department of Public Administration at Veritas University, Abuja . His extensive research portfolio includes work on public administration, political economy, and development studies. Notably, he has authored articles on managing ethno-religious conflict, which informs his perspective on the recent violence .
