Kaduna College of Education Academic Staff Union Suspend Strike

BY: ABUBAKAR LABARAN KAFANCHAN

The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) at the Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya, has suspended its ongoing industrial action.

The suspension was announced in a statement issued by the chapter Chairman, Dr. Christopher Nuhu Yerima, on Tuesday. The decision, which took effect on October 20, 2024, comes after the Kaduna State Government, under Governor Uba Sani, committed to addressing the unions' key demands.

According to the statement, the government agreed during a meeting with the Joint Union of Tertiary Institutions in Kaduna State (JUTIKS) to implement 70% of the CONPCASS and CONTEDISS salary structure, effective from October 2024. The government also agreed to implement the 65-year retirement age for non-academic staff.

The strike began on September 30, 2024, after the state government failed to honor previous agreements regarding the implementation of the CONPCASS/CONTEDISS salary structures and the 65-year retirement age.

Dr. Yerima's statement explained that the suspension follows the directives from JUTIKS and the resolutions of the Gidan Waya chapter's meeting held on Monday, October 20, 2024. The union has consequently called on all its members to resume work immediately.

While appreciating the "unwavering support and solidarity" of its members, the union assured them of its commitment to ensuring the full implementation of the agreement reached with the state government
