Senator Lalong Mourns Former Plateau Deputy Governor, Prof. Sonni Tyoden
Jos, Nigeria – Senator Simon Bako Lalong, former Governor of Plateau State and current representative of Plateau South Senatorial District, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of his former Deputy Governor, Prof. Sonni Gwanle Tyoden, who died in Jos on Sunday, May 4, 2025.
In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Makut Macham, Senator Lalong led a delegation of former cabinet members to the deceased’s residence in Rayfield, Jos, to console the family.
Describing Prof. Tyoden as a trusted confidant, political ally, mentor, and friend, Lalong highlighted his pivotal role as Deputy Governor during the APC Rescue Administration’s eight-year tenure. He credited Tyoden for bringing wisdom, stability, and experience to the government, contributing significantly to its success.
Beyond politics, the late professor left an indelible mark in academia, having served as Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos where he transformed the institution. As a scholar, he excelled in teaching, research, and mentorship shaping the careers of numerous students who later achieved prominence in various fields.
Lalong prayed for God’s comfort for the bereaved family, especially Tyoden’s wife, Mrs. Abigail Tyoden and his children.
Responding on behalf of the family, Mr. Gyenu Tyoden expressed gratitude for Lalong’s visit and acknowledged the strong partnership between the deceased and the former governor. He assured that burial arrangements would be announced in the coming days.
