Abeokuta, Ogun State– In a thrilling showdown, Godwin Favour of Team Nasarawa triumphed over Ameachi Favour of Team Bayelsa in the women’s singles tennis event at the 22nd National Sports Festival. After securing a decisive 4-1 victory in the first round, she maintained her momentum, clinching the second round 4-2 to advance to the third round.
Speaking to reporters after the match, an elated Godwin Favour praised her opponent’s skill, acknowledging her as one of Nigeria’s top players. "I had to give my absolute best to win this match,"she said.
When asked about her next round, she remained optimistic. "With God’s grace, I’m confident I can win. I’m fully prepared to fight for the gold medal and will use every strategy to achieve that goal."
Currently ranked 14th in Nigeria’s women’s tennis rankings, Godwin Favour is determined to break into the top three.
Team Nasarawa’s coach, Shuiabu Usman, expressed pride in her performance. "She played exceptionally today, showcasing her true potential," he said. He also thanked Nasarawa State Governor, Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule, for his unwavering support and pledged to guide the team to gold medals in appreciation of the state government’s efforts.
In other matches, Team Nasarawa faced setbacks in the men’s singles category. Sani Yau lost to Delta’s Ikechukwu Emmanuel (4-2, 4-2), while Abdusallami Mohammed was defeated by Rivers’ Abu Akanis (4-2, 5-3). However, both players will have another chance in the mixed doubles event tomorrow at the Moshood Abiola International Stadium.
