Nasarawa State Intensifies Efforts to Combat Viral Hepatitis

In a decisive move to address the growing threat of viral hepatitis, the Nasarawa State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), presented groundbreaking research findings to the Deputy Governor on January 20, 2025. The meeting, held at the Deputy Governor’s Office, highlighted key risk factors driving the transmission of hepatitis B and C in the state.

The research, which was commissioned at the request of the Deputy Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Akabe, revealed critical gaps in awareness, healthcare access, and risky cultural practices contributing to the disease's spread. The findings were presented jointly by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Damian John Ali, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Dr. Ibrahim Adamu Alhassan.

Building on the research presentation, the meeting revisited discussions about the state’s Viral Hepatitis Elimination Program, which was launched in 2017 but later suspended due to funding challenges. A key initiative under the program, the Viral Hepatitis-Free Village Campaign, was highlighted for its role in providing free screening and vaccination services to vulnerable communities, helping bridge healthcare gaps and protect at-risk populations.

Acknowledging the importance of the findings, the Deputy Governor commended the Ministry of Health and CHAI for their efforts in addressing the hepatitis burden. “The fight against viral hepatitis requires collective effort. I urge all stakeholders to strengthen collaboration and ensure that interventions reach those most in need,” he stated.

Dr. Ibrahim Adamu Alhassan stressed the importance of youth involvement in raising awareness about the disease, while Dr. Damian John Ali reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to revitalizing the elimination program and implementing evidence-based solutions.

The Deputy Governor assured the government’s support in addressing funding constraints and ensuring the sustainability of intervention programs. With this renewed commitment, Nasarawa State is determined to reduce the high prevalence of hepatitis, safeguarding the health and well-being of its citizens.
